Tired of Sciatica Pain? Ayurveda’s Basti Therapy Brings Proven Relief

Sciatica, called Gridhrasi in Ayurveda, causes pain from the lower back to the legs, often with stiffness and trouble moving. Many think it comes only from a pinched nerve, but a 2025 review study in the Journal of Ayurveda and Naturopathy showed that stress, anxiety, and even job worries can worsen sciatica symptoms.

In Ayurveda, sciatica is seen as a Vata dosha imbalance. One of the most effective Ayurvedic treatments for sciatica is Basti therapy (a Panchakarma procedure). This natural sciatica remedy utilizes medicated oils, such as Sahacharadi taila and Ksheerabala taila, to alleviate pain, relax stiffness, and enhance mobility. Herbal formulations such as Yogaraja Guggulu are also prescribed in Ayurvedic pain management.

Interestingly, Basti is also one of the Shatkarma cleansing practices in Hatha Yoga, along with Neti, Dhauti, Nauli, Kapalbhati, and Trataka, all of which help purify the system.
